The Wearer’s Right: Sunday Recap

Over the weekend, a few of us from Thirteen Itches decided to check out a tradeshow at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. Having never been to a tradeshow before, I was very intrigued as to what it was to be like inside the Hordern. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to the Hordern before to catch the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, N.E.R.D and The Strokes in concert, but the organisers of The Wearer’s Right tradeshow really transformed the place.

As we walked inside, there were rows and rows of stalls filled with clothing and accessories from brands all across Australia. Some, we found out, were also from countries abroad! Some of the brands we knew (Keep, tHe Horse, Carhartt, Huf, Super, incase, Obey, Vanishing Elephant, Stussy, etc) but for this recap, we’ve chosen to feature some of the (unknown) brands that stood out to us at the event.

The first brand that caught our eye and that we thought really set them apart from the others was accessories brand Bellroy, whom specialise in making leather wallets. As you can see above, the point of sale drawn and written out on the blackboard really caught our attention and we just had to stop and get to know the brand a little more. Speaking with Andy, we soon found out that the brand had been around for a couple of years and had really hit a peak when Hypebeast blogged about them, which then lead to them selling out all their products! Not bad, aye?

Incorporating practicality with simple and attractive designs, Bellroy had an array of products on offer, but the one we were particularly intrigued with was the travel wallet (which will be released in two weeks). With a pocket for your passport and a means to open up and fit your boarding pass, as Andy said, he couldn’t believe no-one else had thought of it! Keep your eye out for this brand and follow them on their blog.

Next up we visited a smaller stall from Queensland’s Wrism. Showing their second season, we spoke with Matt from the label who told us they too had been around for a couple of years and by the look of the shoes (above), some of us were tempted to purchase a pair of soles then and there but alas, we could not!  Combining suede with great colourways, it was an instant attraction. Currently stocking in Sydney at Somedays and Cheap Monday, if you’re from interstate or want to see more, check out their online store.

Not wanting to seem like there was only product on offer for the fellas, I hit up a few of the stalls that had some great stuff for the ladies. As with most girls, we all have a penchant for pretty shoes and the Sole Society stall definitely caught my eye. Hailing from Sydney, I spoke with the woman behind the entire label, Sara Caverley, who showed me the lastest Winter collection as well as what was to come for the upcoming Summer season. Made of leather and real wood, ladies, this is one designer we must all have on our radar! For more information, contact Sara here.

Another one for the ladies was a tiny stall from French label Elvis Et Moi. Originally from France but currently based in Manly, we met with Emilie on the day, and like all French women, she was effortless stylish and although the collection on show was very small, you could really see how very intricate and detailed the pieces of jewellery were. Although her line is mainly brass at the moment,  she uses beads like Swarovski crystals, bones and howlite stone which  has a calming and protective effect on its wearer.

A friend of Miguel’s, we hit up Song for the Mute, another collection for the males. Though I didn’t speak with the guy behind the brand, Melvin Tanaya, personally, I did find out that Tanaya creates pieces that can be worn separately or layered, the idea is to make it work according to your personal style. I loved hearing that as it made for interesting experimentation with your clothing and making an outfit stand out. Along with clothing, Tanaya also showed us a couple of accessories/jewellery that they had on display which was a collaboration with a Melbourne label.

Last up, we hit up Moscot (part of The Stables stall) and the cabinet display of sunnies really stood out amongst the other product on offer within the stall. Another brand that’s been around for a couple of years, I learnt that they were releasing a pair of really nice sunnies (shown below) exclusively for the Australian market with only 100 pairs made available. The brand is currently stocked in Incu and Somedays but they also have an online store launching this week so jump on that! Definitely hoping to grab a pair of those sunnies myself!

That’s all from our end. Hit up the brands that we mentioned and show some support. Definitely would be a good thing to own some of their nicely designed product. Great people too. Until next year.
