Drake – Thank Me Later (review)

I’ve never been a fan of Aubrey Graham, merely because of the first song he released. More so, particular lyrics accompanied by that video for ‘Best I Ever Had’. The combination of the two just gave me the first impression that he was a complete sleazebag. I also thought he was totally ripping off Kid Cudi heading in the same genre and all… Having the critics think he was the first one to have songs hitting on emotional/sensitive rap and hip hop – instead of the usual themes of money, cars, clothes and hoes (girls).

But then last month at a work function, one of the managers played a couple of songs that had me asking the name of the song and rapper/singer. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was Drake…

Between Kid Cudi and Drake, I would take Kid Cudi any day, after all, he is one of my favourite rappers in the game right now but Aubrey Graham aka Drizzy aka Drake has actually brought out a honest release in “Thank Me Later”.

Fluffy McCloud

Fluffy McCloud is a short, animated film created by Conor Finnegan. It is a story about a cute, little cloud and his interesting encounters with humans. Although the film may seem lighthearted and comical, it clearly portrays our love and hate relationship with mother nature. I found it a clever way of showing awareness to the crowd. Please enjoy everyone!

Graphic Festival At the Opera House

I found out about Neil Gaiman (The Sandman, American Gods, Coraline) being at the Opera House a while back, but I must admit it slipped my mind. I just managed to get a couple of decent tickets tonight when I remembered about the event…thank goodness for those handy Opera House emails. Neil Gaiman will be reading one of his new stories accompanied by the FourPlay string quartet and images by renowned graphic novel artist, Eddie Campbell (From Hell).

While booking my tickets I found out that there is a lot more going on that weekend than just Gaiman, there is a whole festival devoted to comic books, illustration, animation, music and multimedia: Graphic Festival. I got so excited about all the fun things on offer. I also booked tickets to an evening with Kevin Smith (Clerks, Dogma, Zack and Miri). His first show was actually sold out, luckily for the slow pokes he announced a second show. Should be exciting!

I also plan on watching Akira with live score performed by Regurgitator. I must admit, I have yet to see the anime but I hear its epic.

The Graphic Festical is during 7-9th of August at the Opera House. Click HERE for more info.

Street Fighter X Tekken

At Comic-Con in San Diego a few days ago, after several months of rumours, Capcom (a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games) announced that Street Fighter X Tekken is in development for the PS3 and the Xbox 360. At the announcement Yoshinori Ono, the Producer of Street Fighter X Tekken, stated: “This is history we’re making. Two fighting games that have rivalled each other are finally standing on the same stage. This isn’t just a showdown between Tekken and Street Fighter, but a decisive battle for Capcom and Namco Bandai Games. So I’m going to give it my all.” This is going to be epic! If you don’t believe me just watch this gameplay teaser video. Enjoy!

Vans Leather Pack

The Vans leather pack will make you forget everything you’ve ever known about formal footwear. These shoes are leather, but they do not have funky laces or feel uncomfortable like all other formal leather shoes do.

Featured above from the Vans 2010 Fall/Winter collection, the SK8 Hi and the Classic Low were given a leather makeover, and both came out looking surprising dope.

The Vans leather pack is perfect for people who don’t want to buy a ‘nice’ pair of shoes that they will most likely only wear a couple of times a year. Hey, these shoes just may make you want to attend your girlfriend’s family’s next shindig! No guarantees.

Hit the jump for a closer look then make your purchase here at Anoutcommune.

When Gravity Fails

Salvadore Dali would be so proud.

The art duo of graphic designer Takayuki Nakazawa and photographer Hiroshi Manaka have developed a vivid, moving series of still images showcasing life, not in motion, but in explosion.

Gravity is thrown completely out the window in this series of work, and a collection of household items and human subjects float in chaos.   Nakazawa and Manaka’s gravity-free art work belongs to the “Fantasy in Life” collection the Japanese duo have developed.

“Our work is a blend of both graphic design and photography”, says Nakazawa.  “We don’t regulate ourselves with any genres or expression methods because we want to challenge various methodologies. We generally make images with fantastic atmospheres.”

Nixon x Murasaki Sports

I need a watch. I tend to rely on my phone to tell me what the time is but I do need/want a new watch. I purchased a cool white futuristic one when I was in Japan with the rest of the Thirteen Itches crew a while back but I got over it pretty quickly. Lucky it wasn’t too pricey. Something like the above would be nice.

In celebration of the 100th Murasaki Sports store opening, the Japanese surf and action sports retailer got together with Nixon to collaborate on ‘The Player’ and ‘The Rubber Player’ models. Both styles come in black colourways, one in metal, the other one in rubber, featuring contrasting neon accents on the dial. Further details about the collaboration have been engraved on the back of the cases.

Big Bang Big Boom

Big Bang Big Boom is a stop motion animation by the artist Blu showing “an unscientific point of view on the beginning and evolution of life … and how it could probably end.” Now the video has recently been posted on countless blogs, I have personally watched it about 4 or 5 times, and although it’s pretty uncool for a blog to advertise something that is “so 5 days ago”, I simply cannot help myself. I’m posting this video for those who have not yet had the opportunity to see this amazing example of art and dedication by Blu, and if you have seen it before then it is just another opportunity for you to watch it and be amazed once more.
