Drake – Thank Me Later (review)

I’ve never been a fan of Aubrey Graham, merely because of the first song he released. More so, particular lyrics accompanied by that video for ‘Best I Ever Had’. The combination of the two just gave me the first impression that he was a complete sleazebag. I also thought he was totally ripping off Kid Cudi heading in the same genre and all… Having the critics think he was the first one to have songs hitting on emotional/sensitive rap and hip hop – instead of the usual themes of money, cars, clothes and hoes (girls).
But then last month at a work function, one of the managers played a couple of songs that had me asking the name of the song and rapper/singer. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was Drake…
Between Kid Cudi and Drake, I would take Kid Cudi any day, after all, he is one of my favourite rappers in the game right now but Aubrey Graham aka Drizzy aka Drake has actually brought out a honest release in “Thank Me Later”.
Graham co-wrote the entire record and opens up with ‘Fireworks’ featuring Alicia Keys which definitely sets the tone and mood for the rest of the record.
Like Cudi, Drake isn’t afraid to open up and pour his heart out through his songs. For this reason, neither should be judged for who they are or for their “celebrity” status cause they are simply telling their story: the raw and candid truth.
‘Karaoke’ tells us about his hunger to climb the ladder of fame, leaving behind the girl he loved in the process, whilst on the flip side, ‘The Resistance’ refers to his thoughts on all the changes that have occurred thus far and the effects that fame has had on the people around him. ‘Up All Night’ has Drake showing his appreciation and love for those people who’ve always had his back, despite the effects celebrity has had on his life; and my favourite track, ‘Find Your Love’ will definitely have the female fans listening and pressing repeat, appreciating the fresh perspective of a man telling us how he really feels.
A couple of weak tracks here and there including ‘Over’ – the hook gets a bit annoying - and ‘Fancy’ where Drake is saved simply by T.I’s guest spot, but the entire record has been over-ridden with so many guest spots from the likes of Jay-Z, T.I., new girl on the block Nicki Minaj, Keys and her fiancé Swizz Beats, that some may not notice.
Overall, “Thank Me Later” is a solid debut release, although I think I prefer Drake’s singing over his rapping. Just saying.

10!????? booooo!!!! More like 2.. He gets 2 for them boobies in his Best I Ever Had clip.
I fucking hate Drake! Oh and pretty sure Lupe was before Kid Cudi and before Lupe there were a shitload others.
I still love you though Chau.
I don’t know who “The Second Hater” is but thanks for the love, even if you didn’t love my review. And yes, Lupe was probably before Kid Cudi and Drake but I never said I loved Drake more than Cudi and Lupe. This review was based purely on his album – some of his lyrics just struck a chord, and as KC said in that ‘Forever’ remix post, he writes songs that gets stuck in your head.
Simple as that.
