Oh Joanna…

jn

I’m a sucker for quirky, unique, talented women. I’m even more of a sucker for beautiful women who play the harp and sing. It’s pretty rare to find that combo but when Marika put me on to Joanna Newsom not too long ago, I was simply dumbfounded. I fell in love. Just look at her. Andy Samberg is one lucky mothertrucker. She’s on some angel, right hand of god, type steez.

Her voice is something to get used but after a while you kinda get it. You probably wouldn’t have it any other way. The sound of the harp and her voice compliments so well, just like marshmellows, and nuts in rocky road ice cream. Her music was even sampled by Hip Hop producer Exile on the Fashawn track When She Calls (best track of Boy Meets World in my opinion). She was actually in Sydney for the Sydney Festival this year and it was a shame that we missed her.

Joanna’s latest album Have One On Me released earlier this week and indie websites have been buzzing with excitement. Check this interview she did with Triple J. If you get a chance, cop the album. It’s something different but definitely something that’ll entertain and take you to another place.

Meet Buzz

217794_1266152627_large

Look familiar? This is a 3d rendering (even though the original was a 3d rendering) of Pixar’s Buzz Lightyear. Designed by Brazilian 3d Artist Raoni Nery, his intention was to make a parody of Starcraft Mariners and point out the similarities between the two fictional characters. Looks amazing doesn’t it? For an up close look and other work by Raoni click HERE.

RJD2 – The Glow

It’s no secret that hip-hop music videos are infamous for their “get money, ho’s, respect” themes and RJD2′s clip for The Glow from his latest offering, Colossus (an album that is constantly in my playlist), includes all the ingredients to make a great hip-hop video and is presented just a little differently to make it really stand out. The clip will have you smiling the whole way through.

Just a little fact: The introduction theme song for the popular TV series Mad Men is produced by RJD2.

Lupe Fiasco at Enmore Theatre (21.02.2010)

P2212841

I received news late last year that I would be attending the side show of Chicago’s own Wasalu Muhammad Jaco. For most of you, you’re probably scratching your heads wondering who exactly I’m referring to. For a few months I forgot that I had tickets to his show but then February 21 rolled around and though some were not exactly happy that the concert was on a Sunday night, that didn’t deter my excitement for what was to come.

Not knowing any of the support acts, I deliberately turned up late to Sydney’s The Enmore Theatre and just in time too it seemed. I found my spot on the floor and patiently waited.

The lights dimmed and the crowd went crazy. Members of the band came up on stage and the all too familiar introduction of ‘Shining Down’ (the first single released off the soon-to-be-released record “Lasers”) played. Walking out on stage in a black and red military-style jacket, white tee and jeans was the man of the moment: Mr Lupe Fiasco.

Backed up by his DJ, drummer and guitarist, Fiasco predominantly performed songs off his second album, “The Cool”. However, he also brought back hits from his debut, “Food and Liquor”, including ‘The Instrumental’, ‘I Gotcha’, and the song that put him on the map, ‘Kick, Push’. Lupe also performed a couple of tracks off his recent mixtape, “Enemy of the State: A Love Story” including the Radiohead inspired ‘The National Anthem’.

Vinyl Fantasy 7

vf7

A few nights ago a friend introduced me to this album by Team Teamwork. So what this is, its basically soundtracks from the game itself mixed with tracks from famous hip hop artists including MF DOOM, Murs, Jay Z and many more. I think I should just let the music do the talking. If you’re a geek and you’re into your hip hop this ones especially for you, but I’m sure anyone would enjoy this…and one more thing…its FREE!

Gear Ring

Here’s a clip of an intriguing piece of jewelry I spotted the other week. It’s by a new company out of NYC going by the name of Kinekt Design, just ripping straight off their about page they… “seek to bring you forward-thinking design objects and products that fuse together a modern aesthetic with tangible interaction.” Well they’ve seemed to achieve that with this gear ring they’ve produced, it will be interesting to see what else they have in store…

13 Questions With Honzo – Lifelike Clothing

girls-2388

For our second installment of 13 questions with 13 itches we go down south to Melbourne to catch up with a good friend who is also starting his own label. I met Honzo at a Sneakerfreaker swap meet early last year. He was selling very interesting t-shirt designs that really caught my eye. Homie was down right friendly and chilled out with us the entire day (he was selling his product directly opposite our table). We got to talking bout his label and his simple yet eye catching designs (which he produces ALL BY HIMSELF). It’s been a while since I’ve had a good chat with him and It gave me an opportunity to check up on the scene in Melbourne. Check the interview after the bounce.

Kelv’s Kollection

Halfsleeve homie Kelvin Saik is currently in the Samsung Capture competition. The director who gets the most views goes to New York. Simple as that. He’s done about 4 videos so far. It’s very well cut and the subject matter of his videos focuses on the  street culture in Sydney. The video above follows the Sydney Sunday Session crew, a group of fixed gear enthusiasts who part take in epic rides around Sydney. Watch all his videos and get his view count up! All the best dude!
