FELT 3!!!!

Oh snap! Slug and Murs are at it again. The Felt series is one of the most entertaining hip hop collaborations to come out in the independent hip hop scene. This time round they have Aesop Rock on the boards which is sure to make heads bop.

From the Rhymesayers website – “B-List actresses be warned and flattered because FELT is back! Slug (Atmosphere) and Murs (Living Legends) reunite for their third release from moniker FELT. These MCs teamed up with The Grouch (Living Legends) in 2002 to release FELT’s debut album A Tribute to Christina Ricci. Collaborating with producer Ant (Atmosphere) in 2005 resulted in their second coming A Tribute to Lisa Bonet. With the fresh addition of Aesop Rock (Def Jux) on production and unwavering love for those forgotten actresses who warmed their hearts, Slug and Murs are pleased to present FELT 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez dropping 11.17.09 on Rhymesayers Entertainment.”

Shepard Fairey x Upper Deck ‘Michael Jordan’ Prints

Last week, Andrew posted about the “Greatest of All-Time” Michael Jordan being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. This week, Obey has officially announced they will be releasing a series of three prints of the iconic sportsman in collaboration with Upper Deck and artist Shepard Fairey.

Growing up with an older brother whose love for Jordan, the Chicago Bulls and ultimately the game itself was bigger than anything else and eventually influenced the entire family; there was not one day that would go by without mention of the topic of basketball.

Jordan makes a distinguished focus for these portrait prints because anything and everything about him represents cultural substance. Whether it be a game, the endorsements he promoted, or the number(s) he played, when you flick on an old game with him doing what he does best, it is guaranteed that whoever is watching that game in this moment can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing the first time they laid eyes on the inspirational figure.

Caravaggio – The Supper in Emaus – 1601

These days everyone calls themselves artists or designers just because they can whip up something on photoshop, crop a bit here, paste a bit there…but when it comes to real skill, its gotta be done the old grimey traditional way. This guys name is Gary, met him outside Town Hall Woolworths. It’s really hard these days to find people doing things for the love of it and not the money. Mad respect for this guy, he travels the world painting. I was kind of surprised at how many onlookers there were just taking photos and not even asking questions…I mean don’t you get curious? So me being me, walked up to him and started talking. This guy spent 4 hours each day for 8 weeks to get up to this point, and he’s only been doing this for 4 years. One day four years ago, he just literally gave away all his possessions and travelled the world painting. Mad respect for Gary.

I guess something moved me to talk to this guy, he seemed really interesting and I asked him a few deep questions to just found out more about him. So I asked him, if he could rate his life out of 10, how satisfied he is right now, and he gave me and 8 outta 10. And then I asked him what would make it a 10 out of 10? And he answered…Time, as he wanted to perfect his skills and be the best at what he does.

Doesn’t that get you thinking? There’s gotta be more than that to life. Seek and you shall find.

Enjoy the pictures.

BlakRoc

I really don’t know what to say, this is epic! I grew up a hip-hop head but at the age of about 17-18 rock and roll really entered my life and when I heard the Ohio-based duo, The Black Keys, I almost instantly became their number one fan-boy. Attack and Release, the bands most recent album, was produced by Grammy Award-nominated Danger Mouse, (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album) and the team-up has really helped the pair gather a much wider fan base. Dame Dash, of Roc-A-Fella Records, has taken notice and seems excited to bring us what he believes “is gunna make history”, Blakroc. A collaboration album between the Black Keys and some of the biggest and best hip-hop/rap artists on the scene today, including Mos Def, The Rza, Q-Tip, Reakwon, Pharoahe Monch, Jim Jones, Billy Danze, Noe, Nicole Wray, Ludacris and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

The album drops on Friday, November 27, 2009. Check the Blakroc site for more videos and goodies. It’s going to be hot!

Downtime Learning

Despite all the craziness (university, work, etc) going on at the moment, its been nice to kick back and enjoy some offside learning of my own. Fortune, one my favorite magazines, has got me hooked with this months issue on Business Style. Monocle, UK based on the other hand, covers up the finest of everything from politics, culture, architecture, business to design. My homegirl, Chrissie showed me the newest issue and I had to go pick it up the next day. If your interested in injecting a bit of worldly culture into you, go get a copy.

Paper cuts

I adore the way paper cut art is gaining exposure.. a reaction against our new digital age perhaps? I remember my fascination with Rob Ryan’s work (pictured) in Frankie magazine (July/Aug 08) – delicate paper screens depicting poetic words and sweet scenes inspired by “sadness, introspection. city parks, people behaving well in a poorly behaved world, and children who are lonely and wise.”

What I love the most is the quietness in this art(craft)form. It’s stripped of colour, and we’re brought back to simple shapes and thoughtful construction. The care taken to create each piece individually and the nostalgia of each poetic scene is touching, hopeful and honest.

Also check out Stuart McLachlan’s paper illustrations – spotted in today’s Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Weekend – http://www.stuart-mclachlan.com/folio.html

Now there’s another artist who knows how to handle a scalpel.
