Secret Wars Finals Coverage

The finals for Sydney’s Secret Street Wars went off! Showing off to a sold-out crowd, Houl and Creon battled it out for a good 90mins and did more than just impress the crowd who watched on drinking beers, chilling out and listening to the banging music.   As the art works slowly took form, the contrasting styles of the two artists made for tough competition.  Amazing works from the brush strokes of Creon and the bold accurate lines by Houl.  With Judging coming from the likes of Ben Frost and Luca Ionescu and a dB reading from the Audience – the call was too close! Houl took out Australia’s first Secret Wars battle in Sydney by just 0.1dB. Congratulations Houl!!

Melbourne peeps – Secret Wars is coming your way in October, be sure to check out the draw cards and check out some of the heats!

Thirteen Itches Presents… LinoType – kNow Your plaCe

For all of our dedicated followers, you all should know that we have a pretty eclectic mix of music. We here at the Thirteen Itches love it when we meet new people that educate and school us on creative topics. We’re hoping to host regular music sets by special guests to keep you guys up to date on what gets our musical juices flowing. Hopefully it turns into a podcast, but that all depends on timing and other technical issues. We’ll keep you guys posted for sure.

Recently I met this cat named LinoType through a friend. LinoType hails from LA and  is staying in the land of OZ for a year to pretty much hang out and experience the whole Australian laid back culture. Back in LA, LinoType was a hustling DJ, hosting his own shows, and grabbing gigs left and right. He’s already been on FBI radio in Sydney and had a set during the Stolen Records show. Bottom line, LinoType knows his shit. Hip Hop in particular, he digs and obsesses over vinyl. He has a true love for music and is well educated on the roots of hip hop. Lookout for this cat at the next hip hop event. He’s a lurker, he won’t be on the dance floor, rather he’ll be observing the DJ and listening for the transitional mixes and blends, he’ll take mental notes and adapt them to his very own set. He’s on some X-Men Mystique type steez, minus the boobies.

LinoType has kindly shared this mix for the Itches and for you all. Inspired by The Tunnel night club in NYC, this mix is a myriad of tunnel bangers. The tunnel was a landmark night club in NYC, that held a Sunday-night party called “Mecca”. When Funkmaster Flex took over the party’s prime-time slot—roughly 1 a.m. to 2:30 a.m.—in the mid-’90s, the place would turn into a ruckus. Mecca was known for catering their music to dealers, pimps, gangsters, and other true hip hop enthusiasts. The hip hop that was being played was too hard for your regular night club. They were all street records. They made cats go crazy. If you were the DJ and you didn’t make the crowd go mental, apparently you didn’t last long. The Tunnel eventually shut down in 2001 for persistent violence.

Tun·nel bang·er (noun) Circa 1994-2000, a record—often hardcore and aggressive—that whipped the crowd into a frenzy during the prime-time hour after 1 a.m. at the NYC club’s Sunday-night party.

kNow Your plaCe is a one take live mix of NYC ruffneck hip hop songs. inspired by the recent Cipha Sounds ’75 greatest tunnel bangers’ list. recorded at the Cold Room, West Ryde, NSW, AU. Check after the jump for the tracklist.

Up There Documentary

UP THERE from The Ritual Project on Vimeo.

Up There is a documentary about the rare profession of sign painting. It’s really inspiring for the fact that these guys create large scale advertisements by hand. The film is directed by Malcolm Murray, produced by Mekanism, and based on an original concept developed by the advertising agency Mother NY.

“Hand-painted advertising is a dying craft, equal parts art and labor. Shot predominantly in Lower Manhattan in the Fall of 2009, ‘Up There’ is the emotional story of a few generations of men — some working on Stella Artois’ ‘The Ritual Project’ wall, others reflecting on the lives they’ve lived – who continue to keep this form alive despite changing economic conditions…” —Mother

Justin Bieber – Baby (El-P Remix)

Ok settle down… before you hold any grudges, take the time to listen to the track. Put all your Bieber hate aside and just listen. This remix is killer. First time I heard of this was from Shantan Wantan Ichiban on FBI radio. Homie was all over this when it came out. The remix is fairly old but I thought I’d share for the unlucky who have missed out. For those who are not too familiar of El-P, he’s big time in the underground hip hop scene. He’s a producer/MC from New York who’s also the founder of Definitive Jux record label. El-P has a dense, aggresive, and angry approach to his music. The idea for this remix came directly from Bieber’s lyrics. If you took the time to listen to Biebers voice (which I know may be a painful experience in itself) he’s actually talking about a bitch that played him. I guess El-P was baffled into why the production was so up beat. He creates a perfect sound scape in the remix though.

Moonlight & Milkyway Rising

Once in a while, don’t you just wish you could escape the world and just be in complete solitude, no cell phones, no laptops, no e-mails to reply, and just sit back and bask in the indescribable? We all know that its close to impossible to do that, to get away from work, to get away from the routine life, we have bills to pay. I came across this photographer a while ago, what we can’t do, he does for a living.

Black Milk – Deadly Medley (feat. Royce Da 5’9″ & Elzhi)

Detroit hip hop has always been on point. This line up is bonkers – they don’t even need Marshall on this (probably too busy diddling Rhiannas nipple ring – snap!). Black Milk has one of the most crisp drums in the production game and this track makes me all amped for his upcoming LP Album of The Year (out September 14). Lyrically Royce is amazing and Elzhi has me shaking my head at how good he is with his rhyming schemes – “… and I’m dyin’ to test ya/ no denyin’ I’m applyin’ the pressure/ like the iron, I rely on, that lie in the dresser/” - damn..

紙の力… The Power of Paper

For Jeff Nishinaka, paper is not just a tool used for writing. It’s a tool that he magnificently molds, shapes and sculptures into a phenomenal form of art. A native of Los Angeles, this gifted, twenty-something-year-old artist already has a massive collection found all over the world.

Kirrily Johnston’s Apocalypto

There has been an emerging trend of tribal/safari women’s wear this coming spring/summer 2010. I’ve had difficulty distinguishing between original & unique tribal/safari designs and $10 shop copycats. I once opted for the $10 copycat design till I found myself on the train seated next to a high-school student, on a school excursion to the city, wearing the exact same cardigan.

Kirrily Johnston’s Apocalypto line has a perfect marriage of clean lines, geometric shapes and bold yet natural colours. The Apocalypto Halter Dress (RRP AUD$720) will definitely be a statement this summer, where the ladies can transition from a swim at the beach, pop on the Apocalypto Halter Dress, slip on a pair of heels and Samantha Wills earrings and head to the nearest bar.

Introducing the KeepCup.

I recently just got myself one of these at work, and its been the most convenient thing to use. The KeepCup should be our substitute for the countless unrecycable paper cups we use when we buy our early morning cups of coffee. The idea behind it is to provide users with a reusable barista standard coffee cup. Its low in embodied energy, meaning to say its low in energy consumption used to make the product and bring it to market. The cup itself can be microwaved, stacked and home to any sort of beverage. To ensure people know what your preference is theres a silicone band that comes with the cup with engraved preferences. Simply just color the engraved perference with a black marker and your set to go.

The Greatest of All-Time is Back!

We all know 2K10 was a dope game! With most of the Itches crew hooked immediately and exclusively, well apart from Modern Warfare and FIFA 10, but NBA 2K is pretty addictive. It’s one of those games you can just play all day.

With not long to go, His Royal Airness and some of the all time elite athlete’s are stepping back on to the court to show everyone that they have still got it! It’s definitely “Bid-ness time!”

Find the trailer after the jump. It’s definitely worth it!
